Le Mat in the Marseilles tarot means "the madman" or "the beggar" and it was the checkmate in the original gaming use of the card.  I chose this card for the base of the art because he also represents the beginning of the journey of life, fairly oblivious to the effects of the elements, the movement of the heavens, and interaction with other people.  He represents innocence of the beginning of the adventure of life and the fun there is to be experienced.
